Beijing China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping traveled to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan this week for his first overseas visit in more than two and a half years. Chinese state television reported on Monday that Xi Jinping would attend a two-day summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Chinese President has not traveled abroad since January 2020 and has hardly received any foreign guests in Beijing.

According to the Russian ambassador in Beijing, Xi Jinping will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the SCO summit on Thursday and Friday. This is the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since Russia invaded Ukraine. In the conflict, China has positioned itself behind Putin and portrayed the US and NATO as the main culprits of the crisis.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also attend the SCO summit. The meeting with Xi Jinping will be the first since a deadly incident between soldiers from the two armies on the disputed Himalayan border two years ago. The two sides have just agreed on a troop withdrawal in the disputed area, which has been completed.

The SCO summit is expected to formally finalize Iran’s acceptance to the organization. That’s why Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi should have arrived. In addition to China, Russia and India, the organization also includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Iran so far has observer status, as do Belarus and Mongolia. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey are classified as partner countries.
