DJ Smitz burns the deck in India

DJ Smitz is the stage name of Smity Luximon, a Mauritius who became a hit in India thanks to his talent as a DJette and his Rextaurean production company. He released a new single in early August.

“Belly Shake”, the latest song by DJ Smitz, was released on August 8th under the Greek label Alveda and has no intention of stopping any time soon. “I’m going to release another single next month,” said Smity Luximon, who lives in Bombay. It has been 16 years since he moved to India for 16 years.

To date, the 32-year-old Mauritian singer has around ten compilations and seven singles in two songs: Bollywood remixes and Electronic Dance Music (EDM). According to our interlocutor, “dance music”, the world of nightclubs and lively nights are very popular in India. “Music has always had an important place in Indian culture, but nowadays it is the spirit of celebration that dominates. Indians work a lot on weekdays and on weekends they want to relax and have fun. If there’s a word that always comes up, it’s happy and they don’t hesitate to invest in everything related to shows and the like,” said Smity Luximon, who plays at nightclubs and other events.

Apart from his talent as a DJ, Smity Luximon has also founded his production company Rextaurean in India since 2014. “We act as professional artist managers and also produce songs, not to mention hosting concerts and events, among others. Rextaurean is also a platform where we allow young talent to make themselves known,” explains Smity Luximon. Her company also manages the artist’s social network and organizes events, such as weddings and more. “During the wedding season in India, people call in the DJ and we are always there,” he says.

Today, DJette lives a hundred miles an hour, but that’s not why she’s forgotten her beginnings in the music world. The world he entered by chance. It all started in 2006 when this Moka native settled in India to study Communication Design at the Symbiosis International Institute of Design. Some time later, he meets friends who thrive in the nightlife and happens to be doing a lot of things well. “I’m like all young people my age who listen to music just to distract me. Then, my friends who are in the music world, offered me one day to play at a party. I don’t know anything about Deejaying. At first, I wasn’t tempted, then little by little, I enjoyed it and I don’t regret my choice at all,” said Smith.

After that, he learned the basics of trading with DJ Sunny Purba, very famous in India and he tamed the turntables and found his style. He started playing in the trendiest clubs and his passion and talent were such that DJ Smitz wasted no time making a name for himself in the world of nightlife. Despite his success, there is no doubt to drop his studies which lasted four years and which he completed brilliantly.

DJettes: a phenomenon in India

Being a girl in a basically male environment didn’t make it easy for our compatriot when she got into this business. He said that 15 years ago, there were no more than ten DJettes in India. At that time, one could not imagine a woman in the nightlife in a place where there was alcohol. “Today, things have changed. There are about 80% men and 20% women in the Deejaying world, which is quite large in India. Now there is a real craze for DJette and in every nightclub there has to be at least one woman on deck at a party,” he said.

DJette yes… but not forever

Even if Deejaying is his greatest passion, he admits that it is a job he will not be able to do his entire life. “Sometimes I have to go to five different cities in a week. It’s very tiring and slows me down a bit. Besides, I know that someday, I will no longer be a burden in this universe, because DJettes must be young and beautiful. Fortunately, I already have a plan B, ”said our interlocutor.

Connect with his twin brother

Even though he made his mark in India, Smith has not forgotten his home country. In addition, he often returns to see his relatives, especially his twin sister, Smita. “We are identical twins and I miss my sister. Even though we are far apart, we are still connected to each other. When I lose weight, he loses weight too,” she said.

Smity Luximon plans to come to Mauritius in January 2023. He will be at the turntable, if the opportunity allows, to please Mauritians.
