Badminton News: The prospect of battling for India’s first men’s doubles medal at the BWF World Championships didn’t faze Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty last night. They got up every few hours, wondering if it was time to go to the field.
“I’m pretty excited. Even in my sleep, even if I go to bed early, I want to get up and go and even if I keep getting up, I sleep well,” Shetty said.
“I woke up three times in the morning!” cut at Rankireddy. I was like, I have to leave early for the game!”
That enthusiastic attitude was evident on the pitch as they beat defending champions Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi in the quarter-finals to secure a medal for India.
Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi had recovered well in the second set, but Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi won comfortably in the end, 24-22 15-21 21-14.
The Indians were so steady even when they lost in Game 2 that coach Mathias Boe didn’t look worried.
“Mathias is so cold. I was surprised why he was so cold,” Rankireddy said.
“If he had yelled at us, we might have won the second game. He was like, no problem, you played well. He just told us it was our game.”
“We are very happy and excited. We want to end this on a high note. It’s a rematch for us tomorrow; we never beat them (Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik). We just want to go out there and enjoy the pressure. It’s going to be a big game.”
