Commonwealth Games: Loh Kean Yew admits he’s depressed by world champion status

Ligaosport.com –

Badminton News: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) players shouldn’t be intimidated in earlier rounds by unknown players, but a possible quarter-final clash against world champion Loh Kean Yew will be another matter.

However, Loh Kean Yew admitted the pressure would be on him to win gold due to his status as world champion.

“Ever since I won the world championship, the pressure has always been there. I just need to learn to manage and manage,” Kean Yew told the official Commonwealth Games website.

Loh Kean Yew is set to be challenged by India’s K. Srikanth, whom the Singaporean beat to win the world title in Spain last year in the semi-finals.

Canadian Brian Yang took a chance and tried to beat Indian Lakshya Sen in an eventual semi-final.

“I think when people see my name in the draw they think it’s a game they could beat, I’m at that level,” Brian said confidently.

Glasgow 2014 was the last time Malaysia did not win a men’s singles medal.

Freelance badminton player Jin Wei is also expecting a strong performance in Birmingham, but India’s 2016 Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu is on his way.

Sindhu, the heavy favorite to win her first women’s singles gold medal at the Olympics, is set to face Jin Wei in the quarter-finals.

Sindhu is expected to meet second seed Michelle Li of Canada or Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland in the final.

Jin Wei and Tze Yong warmed up well in the mixed squad yesterday as Malaysia beat Zambia 5-0 in Group D at the National Exhibition Center (NEC).

Mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing also started to warm up by beating Kalombo Mulenga/Ogar Siamupangila 21-6, 21-3.
