Mauritius: demonstrations following disclosure of alleged Internet espionage

Opposition MPs demonstrate this Wednesday, 20 July 2022, in front of Parliament and the Prime Minister’s office. They demanded the resignation of the government. They accused the executive of high-level treason in a case of alleged internet espionage. It will be sponsored by the government, according to the former director of Telecom.

In Mauritius, as in all countries, when a case can be linked to the executive, it becomes difficult to know who is telling the truth. Opposition lawmakers demonstrated Wednesday morning outside Parliament and the Prime Minister’s office over alleged internet spying.

This file was revealed by the former director general of Telecom on the twin islands. According to this senior official, in April 2022, technicians came from India to install a device to monitor the content of comments exchanged on the Internet. The specialists intervened for 6 hours at the place where the Safe landed Jacote Bay.

Respondents and Pravind Jugnauth denied the allegations. Head of government speaks of accusations: “absurd”, writes IonNews.

With our neighbors, like us, as soon as a case involves an elected official, justice and police are struggling to investigate. The slowdown in this procedure doesn’t mean any wrongdoing, it’s inherent in laws that protect leaders from grotesque accusations. Unfortunately, this guardrail is also an effective side fence when business is really around.

In many countries, compromising files for “responsibility” struggle to be brought to justice. Often, investigative judges are prevented. Exhibition and search requests are pending. The files, when heard, were five, if not ten years old. Sentences that were passed down no longer had any meaning. Defendants are sometimes no longer in office and while they are in office, have every opportunity to denounce the instrumentalization of justice.

Judgment is symbolized in court with scales. It embodiesEvaluation, what judges are supposed to do, during their investigation and before making a decision.

Politicians, and the leading opposition, do not have this moral obligation. On Wednesday, several opposition lawmakers in Mauritius demonstrated and demanded the resignation of the government for high treason, wrote Mauritius Express. This position makes sense. These elected officials are not part of the ruling majority. They represent voters who do not support this government. So they are in their role. This is not an assessment of merit, but just a logical political posture.

The problem with Wednesday’s incident is police intervention. Police warnings to deputies who demonstrate are at least surprising. Our comrades from sister island, like Defimefiapoint to this intervention.
