Google has expanded its News Initiative training network in India to five more languages. Now includes Punjabi, Assamese, Gujarati, Odia and Malayalam.

Search engine and Technology Giant will also launch a Fact-Checking Academy and induct 100 new trainers to help newsrooms and journalists build their capacity to tackle climate misinformation and examine misleading data and claims such as fake numbers. The company plans to do this in partnership with DataLeads.

Selected candidates will join a fully supported 3-day residency and trainer training program. Preference will be given to those with a new language and with previous experience in data journalism or science, Google said. The last day to apply for this program is 30 July 2022.
“Global verification experts and fact-checkers from India will train them on the curriculum developed in consultation with the Indian Association of Science Journalists, Amity University, Jagran Lakecity University and OP Jindal Global University”, Google reports.
Launched in 2018, the Google News Initiative Training Network in India has trained nearly 40,000 journalists, editors, media students and media educators in nearly 10 languages.
