The new model of the iconic car brand will be launched at Hindustan Motors (HM) Chennai plant, which operates under HMFCI, a subsidiary of CK Birla Group. HM director Uttam Bose told TOI on Wednesday that work is underway to bring Amby out with the “new look”. “The mechanical and design work for the new engine is at an advanced stage,” he added.
HM’s Chennai plant was once used for the production of Mitsubishi vehicles, while the Uttarpara plant was dedicated to manufacturing the Ambassador. The last Ambassador car rolled out of HM’s Uttarpara factory in September 2014. In 2014, India’s oldest automaker HM shut down production, citing high debt and lack of demand. HM owners CK Birla Group sold the car brand to the French automaker in 2017 for Rs 80 crore.
