“Never work for an Indian manager?”: Europe-based Microsoft employee warned in Reddit post

Microsoft is one of the largest technology companies in the world, with millions of customers in almost every country. To provide support to such a large user base, Microsoft has a large Azure support team that helps organizations and professionals who use the company’s cloud computing. Just like other major technology companies in the world, Microsoft also outsources a large part of its customer support to India. While tech companies’ reliance on Indian workforce is increasing day by day, it turns out that tech employees in other countries are not too happy about it. In a post on Reddit, a Microsoft employee based in Europe took to Reddit to warn prospective customer support agents to be wary of Indian managers.

The Microsoft employee revealed that his managers and colleagues in India often contacted customers by phone, even though they had been clearly instructed to do so by email, in the hope of making a connection and getting a 5-star review.

“I told my manager that this approach was problematic, but I got no response or feedback, no raise or bonus despite working hard all year. No raise, no career prospects, and just more support tickets to handle. I felt like a white-collar slave working under an Indian manager with a god complex, who didn’t seem to value the contributions of non-Indians,” the Microsoft employee wrote in the Reddit post.

“I was promoted to this role with almost no training, just self-taught online. Most of the support staff is in India, and they only hire and promote their own people, keeping all the money and rewards for themselves. This creates a very biased and unfair work environment, where India-based employees are given priority over the rest of us,” he added further.

Microsoft support employees have criticized the company's decision to outsource critical functions to India. He believes that it creates many cultural and communication challenges. He ended his post by saying that he would never work for an Indian manager again and also advised against joining the Azure support team.

Within hours of the Reddit post, many other users expressed similar sentiments, with one sharing: “Yes, it’s Microsoft. Management won’t make any changes. I worked at Premier Help before they fired everyone and sent them overseas so they could pay them 5 cornflakes a day. Five-star reviews and phone calls are enough. Leave. The work is bad, the experience is bad, and if you stay there too long, it’s impossible to leave.”

“Indians are promoting Indians. That’s what Microsoft is all about. If one more person says ‘nice sir’ one more time, I’ll have an autistic disorder,” the user sneered.
