Badminton News: World number one mixed doubles players Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong have reportedly withdrawn from the prestigious India Open 2024 tournament next week.
The two men, who were knocked out of the quarter-finals of the recently concluded Malaysia Open 2024, posted on their official Weibo accounts their decision to withdraw from the upcoming tournament in New Delhi.
According to reports, the Chinese pair have withdrawn from the 2024 India Open due to health issues. Ahead of the Olympics, the Chinese duo is this time prioritizing their health over their participation in the India Open.
Zheng and Huang showed great promise at the 2024 Malaysia Open. However, their journey was halted by the passionate duo of Kim Won Ho / Jeong Na Eun from South Korea. Zheng and Huang are three-time reigning Malaysia Open champions. However, the challenge of Korea proved too much for them this time.
Missing the India Open means the Chinese duo will most likely next appear at the Indonesia Masters Super 500 which is scheduled to start on January 23.
Apart from Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong, there is currently no official confirmation regarding the withdrawal of other badminton players from the India Open.
Career of Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong in 2023
Zheng and Huang started the year as the top seeds and three-time defending champions at the Malaysian Open. They defended their title without dropping a single set throughout the tournament. However, a week later, they lost to Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino in the semifinals of the India Open.
Additionally, in March, Zheng and Huang duo competed at the All England Open and were crowned champions for the second time in their careers by beating Korean duo Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-Jung.
In late April, Zheng and Huang entered the Asian Championships as defending champions and finished with a silver medal after losing to their younger compatriots, Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin.
This was followed by a successful Sudirman Cup where the Chinese team was crowned champions.
The duo won their third Super 1000 title of the season at the Indonesia Open, beating Watanabe and Higashino in back-to-back finals.
In August, Zheng and Huang entered the World Championships as the top seeds and defending champions. Zheng reached his fifth final without losing a single match. In the end, both had to submit to Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-Jung, opponents they had not defeated 9 times in the past.
In December, Zheng had the honour of becoming the first player to win five mixed doubles titles at the BWF World Tour Finals when she and partner Huang Yaqiong defeated Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping.
