Iyer's last match for Mumbai was the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha, where his 95 runs helped Mumbai to their record 42nd title, beating Vidarbha by 169 runs.

This month, Iyer returned to India after losing his central contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) this year and winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) title with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as captain. In the one-day series against Sri Lanka, Iyer was disappointing, especially against spin, a style he usually dominates. In three innings, he managed to score only 38 runs, his best score being 23.

Indian wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan will lead the Jharkhand team in the upcoming Buchi Babu Cup tournament in Tamil Nadu, according to Espncricinfo.

The Buchi Babu Trophy is a long-running cricket tournament that will begin on August 15. Earlier, Kishan was not part of the Jharkhand squad but he will join the team in Chennai on Wednesday, as per the report.

This will be the 26-year-old's first return to first-class cricket before he is added to the Indian squad for the upcoming Test series.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Kishan was selected for the Buchi Babu Trophy when he applied to the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA).

ESPNcricinfo quoted a JSCA official as saying: “With Ishaan, it's not a question of ability. It's just a question of how ready he is to come back. The decision is in his hands because we haven't heard from him. As soon as he expressed his desire to come back, he was elected.

It has been a tumultuous year for Kishan in his career. Earlier this year, Kishan, along with Shreyas Iyer, was dropped from the central contracts of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Kishan has missed the recent Ranji Trophy matches despite not featuring for the national team. He was part of the Indian squad in the South Africa Test series last year but withdrew citing “personal reasons”. He last played a T20I for India in November last year, missing the Ranji match involving Jharkhand.

After being removed from the contract list, Kishan returned to competitive cricket as he played for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the 18th DY Patil T20 Cup in 2024 against Route Mobile Limited. The tournament was held from February to March this year.

On his return, Kishan played a pivotal role in the dismissal of a player when he bowled Sumit Dekhale off Sayan Mondal at the DY Patel University Stadium. With the bat, the crowd was entertained as he scored 19 runs off 12 balls, including two boundary wickets and a six. He then featured with the five-time Indian Premier League champions Mumbai Indians in 2024.

In 14 matches, the wicketkeeper-batsman has scored 320 runs at an average of 22.86 and a strike rate of 148.84. (ANI)
