External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu here on Saturday and stressed New Delhi's commitment to deepening India-Maldives relations for the benefit of the people of both countries and the region.
Jaishankar is on a three-day official visit to the Maldives to reset bilateral relations. It is the first high-level visit from India since the archipelago state's pro-China president Muizzu took office last year.
“It was an honour to meet President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Greetings from Prime Minister @NarendraModi. I am committed to deepening India-Maldives relations for the benefit of our people and the region,” Jaishankar posted on X along with a photo of the meeting.
Jaishankar's trip to the Maldives comes weeks after President Muizzu's visit to India in June, where he attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
The Maldives is one of India's most important maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean and overall bilateral relations, including in the areas of defence and security, have shown an upward trend under the previous government in Malé.
