ITS Campus, ITS News – The robotics team of Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), represented by the RIDER team, once again managed to bring pride to the name of the alma mater and Indonesia at the international level. As the representative of Indonesia, the ITS team managed to qualify for the finals and reach second place in the event. ABU Asia Pacific Robot Competition (Robocon) 2022 which was held online in New Delhi, India by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) on Sunday (21/8) evening.

ITS RIDER Team Supervisor Muhammad Lukman Hakim ST MT revealed that before they could compete to represent Indonesia in the Asia Pacific stage, the RIDER team had successfully passed various national selection stages. Among them, being one of the best in the ABU Indonesia Robot Competition (KRAI) at the regional level and becoming the first KRAI champion at the national level.

This professor from the Department of Industrial Mechanical Engineering at ITS added that the RIDER team managed to win first place at the national KRAI level which will coincidentally be held in 2022 at the ITS Campus. “Thank God, with these results, we managed to become the only Indonesian representative at the ABU Robocon 2022 competition,” he said proudly.

Lukman continued, ABU Robocon 2022 is this time themed Lagori. It is a traditional Indian game in which teams try to hit a pile of stones with a ball. In this competition, the pile of stones was replaced by a pole with a ball on top. The robot will get points when the ball it throws successfully hits the ball on top of the pole.

Lukman explained that there are two robots in a team participating in ABU Robocon 2022. The two robots are called R1 (Khonsu) and R2 (Ammit). Khonsu is in charge of shooting Lagori and Ball on Head. Meanwhile, Ammit was in charge of organizing Lagori and retrieving the ball from the ball rack.

Thanks to the hard work of the team, the two robots managed to take the RIDER team to the final round of ABU Robocon 2022. They managed to eliminate both Indian teams and dash the hopes of the Mongolian representatives. In the final round, due to the toughness of the match, the RIDER team had only a slight gap with the Hong Kong team. As a result, the ITS team finally finished second.

With these results, this is the third time that an Indonesian team has won second or second place in the ABU Robocon competition. Another Indonesian team achieved feats in 2013 and 2007, when both were represented by Surabaya State Polytechnic Electronics School (PENS).

In 2021, ITS, through Team RIOT, managed to become the only Indonesian representative to win the Grand Prix title or first place in the ABU Robocon event since it was held in 2002.

Lukman explained that this time, the team encountered various obstacles during the preparations to participate in ABU Robocon 2022. One of them was that the team encountered problems with consistency in shooting the ball. Therefore, the team must find a way to shoot consistently in a short time. “With the right method, Alhamdulillah, the problem can be solved,” he said.

Not to mention that Lukman expressed his thanks to all the members of the RIDER team as each one was willing to sacrifice their vacations to build robots in order to prepare for this prestigious competition. Apart from that, Lukman also thanked the management of ITS for their tremendous support to the RIDER team, both in terms of facilities and funding.

Concluding his explanation, Lukman hopes that all members of the ITS RIDER team can develop their respective potential, so that they can contribute even better in the future. He hopes that in the future, new specializations will emerge from each individual in development. “I hope that we will always achieve this achievement, so that we can continue to make ITS and Indonesia proud in the international arena,” he stressed optimistically.
