G7 Summit: Italian Prime Minister Meloni welcomes Prime Minister Modi, India participates as “outreach nation”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon the arrival of the Group of Seven (G7) countries and international organizations outreach session.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Puglia, Italy late on Thursday evening to attend the G7 summit.

On the sidelines of the G7 summit, Prime Minister Modi met with French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In his farewell speech, Prime Minister Modi said he was “happy that his first state visit in his third consecutive term is to Italy for the G7 Summit”.

The Prime Minister also recalled his previous visit to Italy and Prime Minister Meloni’s visits to India, which contributed significantly to strengthening bilateral relations.”

“I am delighted that my first visit in the third consecutive term is to Italy for the G-7 Summit. I fondly remember my visit to Italy for the G20 Summit in 2021. Prime Minister Meloni’s two visits to India last year were crucial in adding dynamism and depth to our bilateral agenda. We remain committed to consolidating the India-Italy strategic partnership and strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean regions,” said Prime Minister Modi before leaving for Italy.

Giving an overview of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Italy, Foreign Ministry official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said it was a busy day for him.

“We have planned several bilateral meetings with world leaders,” Jaiswal said in the video, adding, “He will also address the briefing session of the G7 summit.”

The G7 summit will be held from June 13 to 15 at the luxurious resort of Borgo Egnazia in the Italian region of Puglia. Prime Minister Modi is attending the summit at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Meloni.

This is India’s eleventh participation in the G7 summit and Prime Minister Modi’s fifth consecutive participation.
