The 73-year-old's swearing-in ceremony for another five-year term as head of government took place in New Delhi in the presence of Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP party and leaders of its coalition partners. The six-week election, which saw more than 968 million people vote, ended a week ago.
The BJP lost its absolute majority in parliamentary elections for the first time in ten years. He won 240 parliamentary seats. This means he is 32 seats short of an absolute majority and must look for a coalition partner. In the 2019 election, he won 303 seats.
Experts believe that the main reason for the BJP's poor performance is unemployment in the world's most populous country. The main opposition party, the Congress Party, received almost double the vote compared to the election five years ago and won 99 seats.
