Amazon insists Just Walk Out isn't secretly run by employees watching you shop

Amazon is pushing back against claims that its Just Walk Out checkout-less technology is run by humans in India, not AI. In a blog post on WednesdayThe e-commerce giant calls these reports “fake” and says a machine learning model powers its system.

Last week, reports began to circulate which Amazon says employs around 1,000 workers in India to watch people shop and review their purchases in stores using its Just Walk Out technology. The report claims that Amazon employees had to review approximately 700 out of 1,000 transactions in 2022, which is not uncommon in the world of AI.

Although Amazon insists that these reports are “erroneous,” it does not deny that humans are not involved in the process at all. Instead, Amazon says its employees are responsible for annotating real and AI-generated shopping data to improve the Just Walk Out system, not running it all. “This is no different from any other AI system that places a high value on accuracy, where human reviewers are common,” Dilip Kumar, vice president of AWS Applications, wrote in the post.

Amazon's post also appears to confirm reports that the company is pulling out of its Just Walk Out technology. Customers have been found to “prefer” to use Amazon’s Dash Cart, which automatically counts items when you place them in the cart, at major grocery stores. In line with these findings, Amazon says it has begun expanding its Dash Cart to third-party grocers and all Amazon Fresh stores.

Meanwhile, Amazon says Just Walk Out is best suited to stores that offer a “curated selection” of products and where customers may only need to purchase a few items. Amazon plans to launch “more small-format, third-party Just Walk Out stores in 2024 than any previous year.” He’s also still not giving up on introducing cashier-less technology to department stores. Amazon says it's working to improve “latency and accuracy for faster, more reliable receipts,” as well as working on new algorithms and sensors.
