HS Prannoy reveals India’s secret to winning Thomas Cup from a WA group

Badminton News: Weeks before finally retaining the glittering silver Thomas Cup, at a time when the idea of India winning the ultimate team title in badminton was almost unthinkable, HS Prannoy decided to make the physical manifestation of a dream.

So, shortly after the Indian team was named for the tournament, HS Prannoy created a “It’s coming home” WhatsApp group. The group has exactly 10 participants, each member of the game team who will travel to Bangkok.

The phrase had become a bit of a meme about the England football team’s chances at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. What started as a joke almost became a reality as England qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. semi-finals. Prannoy, however, insisted that the Indian side go as far as Bangkok.

“Everyone laughed about it on the first day,” admits Prannoy, who at 29 is the oldest member of the group.

“But I said look, you have to write what you really need. I guess I was right,” he smiled.

“Even before winning, we had to believe in it.”

Throughout the tournament, “It’s Coming Home” remains exclusive to the 10 national team players.

“There are other groups that have coaches and support staff and we will post training times and other tournament news. But our other group was just for boys. And the only thing is to motivate each other,” he said.

The most exclusive groups are just one of the ways teams bond and become a tight-knit unit, there for each other, no matter the situation.

“It was a conscious effort that we had to become one. Not just in team meetings, but all the time,” Prannoy said. It also means being there for each other’s game. “It’s one of the things we decide. That after a player has finished the game, we have to come back and cheer on the rest of the team,” Prannoy said.

An exception is made for players playing the fourth (double) or fifth game. “It’s always a bit tiring because you’re in such a state of confusion. You want to support the team in every game, but at the same time it’s very tiring to sit on the sidelines until your game is coming,” he said.

“We were too excited not to be there to support the team. I stayed with the team and did all the fuss before my games,” Prannoy said.

While he knows there is a purpose in being a more encouraging voice and supporting face, HS Prannoy must balance his own demands as an athlete.

“In the final, I cheered to the side, but I also rested whenever I could. Whenever I feel there is a slow phase in a match, I will rest for 15 minutes” , did he declare.

“I was taking a little nap during the game. After Chirag and Satwik won the second game, I immediately set a 15 minute timer for a nap. And I counted 15 minutes because I knew after that the game would be over and I wanted to be there for Chirag and Satwik at that time,” he said.

The day after the tournament ended, the players began to split up, returning home for some and competing for others. On Tuesday, the teams will return to play individual matches at the Thailand Open. But HS Prannoy knows the Thomas Cup is something that will always bond them.

“It took 73 years for the Indian group to win this tournament. Who knows, the next time the group will have a similar experience! It’s a very unique bond that we share,” he said.

The bond will remain, Prannoy felt it even as other physical reminders began to crumble. Take for example the WhatsApp group he created. HS Prannoy noted it, the messages in the group pass less and less. But “It’s home” will not close yet.

“We have all promised that we will have another gathering in India when we all return home. We had planned something just for the 10 of us. So it will stay open for at least a few more weeks.
