Badminton News: Indian men's doubles badminton specialist Chirag Shetty believes that Olympic medalists Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu have raised the standard of badminton in India in recent years.
Saina won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, while Sindhu went a step further by winning a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“Badminton is currently the most popular sport in the country after cricket. The rise of this sport is due to the medals won by Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu in the Olympics,” said Chirag, who won the team gold mixed and individual silver at the 2018 Olympic Games. Commonwealth Games.
“They have been the biggest motivation that this sport needs in our country. And now everyone who wants to take up badminton professionally believes that it is possible,” he said.
Chirag also praised the government for announcing the Khelo Indian Universities Competition.
The first edition of the competition is being organized by the Government of Odisha in collaboration with the Badminton Federation of India, the National Sports Federation and the Indian Olympic Association and will be held from February 22 to March 1.
“I think there are hopes at the national level which can be captured through the Khelo India University competition. If there are any potential winners, they can be helped with scholarships, good nutrition and counselling. We can finally create strong players who can represent India in international tournaments,” said the 22-year-old.
