Badminton News: Team India is expected to have representatives in at least three of the five badminton categories at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
As the qualification window ends on April 28 and the official list of players who have booked their places for the Sumer Games in the French capital will be released after that, India have mathematically assured quotas in men's singles, singles women's and men's doubles.
How does the qualification system work?
In badminton, qualification for the Paris Olympics will be determined through a ranking based on the 10 best results of each player/duo between May 1, 2023 and April 30, 2024.
The two single numbers are made up of 38 players. This includes 16 quotas for the Top 16 of the Paris Ranking List with a maximum of two quotas allowed per country.
The highest ranked individual player from the host country, if not automatically qualified, will be allocated a quota. Two quotas are available depending on the location of universality (decided by the Tripartite Commission).
The list must also meet the criteria to include two athletes from each of the BWF's five continental confederations (continental representative places), provided the player is ranked 250th or higher (ranked between 1 and 250) in the Paris rankings.
The three doubles numbers (men's, women's and mixed) each have 16 quotas. This is the Top 8 of the Paris Ranking List with a maximum of two pairs authorized per country followed by the next eight best duos (limit of one per country).
Each doubles event will involve at least one pair from each of the BWF's five continental confederations.
How are the Indian players positioned?
With only the Continental Championships left before the end of the qualification cycle, the following Indian players have mathematically won their quota for the Paris Olympics
Men’s singles – HS Prannoy (currently ninth in the Paris rankings)
Men's singles – Lakshya Sen (12th in Paris)
Women's Singles – PV Sindhu (13th in the Paris Ranking but 11th based on the criterion of a maximum of two players per country in the Top 16)
Men's Doubles – Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty (second in Paris)
There are no Indian pairs competing for mixed doubles quotas yet.
In women's doubles, Indians Tanisha Crasto-Ashwini Ponnappa and Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand are currently ranked 20th and 27th respectively in the Paris rankings, but Tanisha Crasto-Ashwini Ponnappa and Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand are respectively ranked 12th based on the criteria a maximum of one duo authorized per country outside the Big 8 and can take a quota.
