Bengaluru: Star India, a subsidiary of Walt Disney, has initiated arbitration proceedings against Zee Entertainment Enterprises for alleged failure to comply with the terms of a cricket broadcast agreement, Zee said on Friday.
As per the August 2022 agreement, Star India was supposed to license the television broadcasting rights for the International Cricket Council (ICC) events to Zee for four years starting this year.
However, as Reuters reported in January, Zee canceled the $1.4 billion deal, saying the company was unable to pay.
Star India has demanded “specific performance” of the agreement or payment of damages, Zee said in a statement, without giving details.
Zee said Star India's application did not specify a claim amount and the alleged damages and costs were yet to be ascertained.
The company said it would file a response to Star India's application filed with the London Court of International Arbitration.
Star India did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
