The former world number one in men's doubles won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics with Carsten Mogensen. Before deciding to retire last year, he also won the All England season in 2011 and 2015.
“The Badminton Federation of India (BAI) welcomes Olympic medalist Mathias Boe as coach of the Indian men's doubles team,” BAI Secretary Ajay Singhania said as quoted by Reuters, Saturday (30/1 /2021). “We believe Boe’s valuable experience and understanding of the game will help our players with much-needed guidance.”
India's top badminton players in men's doubles, Chirag Shetty/Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, are still ninth in the Race to Tokyo rankings. Both will compete with 16 other pairs to advance to the various Olympic qualifying tournaments which will reopen on July 23.
Responding to Boe's appointment as coach, Shetty also displayed an optimistic attitude. According to him, the presence of Boe could be a big psychological boost and would be very beneficial to improve his performance and that of Rankireddy.
“He knows what types of talent there are in the top 10 and can help us better understand what needs to be done moving forward,” Shetty told the Olympic Channel.
“Also, Boe and Mogenson have excellent ability to overcome tight matches. He is someone who uses the serve and net play. And that is an area we need to work on,” added the player 23 years old.
