IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians to benefit from Rohit Sharma's removal as captain, claims Sunil Gavaskar

Just 4 days before the IPL 2024 auction, Mumbai announced Hardik as MI captain, ending Rohit's decade-long reign as captain.

Ever since the decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as captain of the Indian Premier League team was announced ahead of IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians have received a lot of criticism. However, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that the franchise made the right decision.

Highlighting that the change of guard will reduce Rohit's burden as captain, Sunil Gavaskar also admitted that MI is a team always looking to the future.

In a historic exchange, Hardik returned to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans in November 2023. Just 4 days before the IPL 2024 auction, Mumbai announced Hardik as MI captain, ending Rohit's decade-long reign as captain.

“Look, they’re always thinking about the future of this franchise. Rohit Sharma is already 36 years old and is also facing immense pressure as he captains India in all three formats. They are trying to ease some of that burden and put that responsibility on the young shoulders of Hardik Pandya,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“Giving Hardik the captaincy will only benefit Mumbai Indians. They have now given Rohit the freedom to speak freely at the top. Hardik can then bat at No. 3 or No. 5 and help them score 200-plus consistently,” Gavaskar added.
