The Congress party on Sunday released its first list of 144 candidates for the upcoming Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, which includes state unit president and former chief minister Kamal Nath from Chhindwara. Jaivardhan Singh, son of former chief minister Digvijaya Singh, was appointed from the Raghigath seat. He was a minister in the last Kamal Nath government which collapsed in March 2021 when 22 Congress MLAs resigned under the leadership of Jyotiraditya Scindia and joined the BJP.
The announcement came a day after the party's central election committee met to finalize the candidates for the AICC office in New Delhi.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced candidates for 136 of the 230 constituencies in the state.
The state will go to the polls on November 17 and the counting of votes will take place on December 3.

The Congress also released the first list of 30 candidates for the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections and another 55 candidates for the Telangana Assembly elections scheduled next month. In Chhattisgarh, the party fielded its chief minister Bhupesh Baghel from the Patan assembly constituency and its deputy chief minister TS Singh Deo from the Ambikapur assembly seat.
In Telangana, the Congress fielded state unit chief Anumala Revanth Reddy from the Kodangal Assembly seat while CLP chief Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu from the Madhira-SC seat.
While the Chhatisgarh assembly polls will be held in two phases on November 7 and 17, the Telangana assembly polls will be held on November 30.
