Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, who were the chief guests on Republic Day this year, visited Jaipur in Rajasthan on Thursday and engaged in conversation over a cup of masala tea at the famous Sahu tea shop in Jaipur.

Sahu Chaiwala set up a temporary stall for the event at the famous Hawa Mahal built in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh. He graciously accepted a token payment of ₹2 for the masala tea served to the leaders. French President Macron uses UPI for payment transactions.

Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X, “Connect over tea and UPI! Prime Minister @narendramodi demonstrated the simplicity and speed of the UPI payment system to President @EmmanuelMacron by purchasing Indian teacups and handicrafts via UPI. Macron arrived in Jaipur at around 2.10 pm, and was welcomed by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. When he arrived there, Macron went straight to the Amber Fortress.
During his visit, Macron explored the majestic Amber Fort, a 16th-century monument located in the Aravalli area, offering panoramic views of Jaipur. Amber Fort, along with five other hill forts, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari welcomed the French president at the Amber Fort, where Macron met and answered questions from enthusiastic schoolchildren who were there to welcome him. The children took the opportunity to take selfies with the special guests.

While Macron's arrival in Jaipur took place in the afternoon, Prime Minister Modi arrived at the venue at 4.30 pm, launching a joint tour in an open jeep from Tripolia Gate to Badi Chaupad, which was the highlight of their highly publicized visit.
Next, the leaders visited the Albert Hall Museum of Hawa Mahal, where they explored the museum built in 1887 by British army officer and engineer Samuel Swinton Jacob.
Continuing their tour, the heads of state visited Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory built in 1730 by Sawai Jai Singh, the founder of Jaipur. This important monument has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
