Israel has asked Pope Francis to help free four of its citizens held captive in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen sent a letter directly to the pope.

In his letter, Cohen asked the Pope to intervene to free four Israeli prisoners in the Palestinian territories. This was reported by Israeli channel Channel 14.

Cohen also sent letters to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the president of the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) , Tedros Adhanom, and other UN officials.

3. Resignation of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc

The Vietnamese National Assembly approves the resignation of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc. The endorsement came a day after he resigned amid an anti-corruption campaign.

His sudden departure comes against a backdrop of political upheaval in the country. The reason is that there is an “anti-corruption purge” and factional fighting which has resulted in the dismissal of several ministers.

“In an extraordinary meeting closed to international media, more than 93 percent of National Assembly members approved Phuc's resignation,” state media reported, citing Asia News ChannelWednesday January 18, 2023.
