After China and Russia, the Foreign Interference Commission now wants to add India to the list of countries whose potential interference it wants to study in Canada's last two elections.
He made the announcement on Wednesday, and formally asked the Canadian government to provide him with documents regarding possible Indian interference during the 2019 and 2021 federal elections.
The Commission did not refer to any specific events or politicians in connection with this request.
India under the microscope
India repeatedly made headlines at home last year, especially after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blamed Indian agents for the killing of a Sikh activist last June. What followed was a major diplomatic crisis in which India temporarily stopped issuing visas and expelled diplomats from both sides.
After China, various media have also started reporting allegations of Indian interference in recent months.
Bureau specifically reported that Indian government agents allegedly interfered in the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party in 2022, according to documents from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service dated October 2022.
Last summer, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's national security adviser, Jody Thomas, stated that India was one of the main sources of foreign interference in Canada.
The Foreign Interference Commission, which is scheduled to be established in late January, will investigate interference activities that occurred in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. Next, the commission will examine the ability of government officials “to detect, prevent and counter such acts of interference.
