Jokowi conveyed this during his speech during his first session. President Jokowi highlighted the worrying situation in Gaza and called on world leaders to step up their efforts to help bring peace to the region.

“Your Excellency, currently the humanitarian situation in Gaza is increasingly worrying. More than 11,000 people have been victims, most of whom are women and children. In front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other southern leaders, Jokowi called on them to show solidarity with Palestine. He also called for a ceasefire.

“Humanitarian aid must be accelerated and increased and, most importantly, peace negotiations must begin immediately,” he added.

Besides the conflict in Gaza, Jokowi also encouraged countries in the South to take responsibility for global governance. He said developing countries can no longer be content with being consumers and relying solely on exports of raw materials, but must become global players and part of the global supply chain.

We know that India hosted the first VOGSS on January 12 and 13, 2023 in a virtual format bringing together 125 countries from the South.

VOGSS is India's attempt to provide a common platform to examine issues, interests and priorities affecting developing countries and also to exchange ideas and solutions and, more importantly, to unite voices and objectives for solving problems and priorities.

In his keynote address at the inaugural session of the Summit, Prime Minister Modi announced the establishment of the Global South Center of Excellence 'DAKSHIN' (Development and Knowledge Sharing Initiative). Dakshin also translates to “South” in Hindi.

“At the G20 summit, I proposed on behalf of India to launch satellites for weather and climate monitoring in the Global South. We are working on it expeditiously,” PM Modi said.

Modi believes that new technologies should not widen the gap between the countries of the North and the South. In the age of artificial intelligence, it is important that technology is used responsibly.
