India on Tuesday rejected Pakistan’s “unwarranted and habitual” reference to Kashmir during an open debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on “Maintaining International Peace and Security: Promoting Peace through Common Development”, PTI reported.

The debate in the UN Security Council took place under China’s presidency.

During the debate, Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, referred to Kashmir in his remarks, which was strongly opposed by the Indian side, PTI reported.

“It will not take me more than a few seconds to rebut a’s unwarranted and habitual remarks Permanent representative I have acted against my country before and I will not dignify them with a response here,” PTI quoted R. Madhu Sudan, Adviser at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations as saying.

To attract international attention, Pakistan regularly raises the Kashmir issue at various global platforms, including the United Nations, regardless of the agenda and topic of discussion, but the attempts have failed to gain traction. India has always maintained that Jammu and Kashmir was, is and will remain an integral part of India.

Bilateral relations between India and Pakistan have been strained since New Delhi abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution and revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, sparking strong reactions in Pakistan. Nuclear-armed Islamabad downgraded diplomatic ties with India and expelled India’s envoy.

New Delhi has categorically told the international community that abrogation of Article 370 is an internal matter of India. It also recommended Pakistan to accept reality and stop all anti-India propaganda.
