The dispute between India and Canada escalates – politics

India is currently not issuing visas to the North American country amid high tensions with Canada. The reason is a security concern, a Foreign Ministry spokesman in New Delhi said at a press conference on Thursday: “You are aware of the security threats facing our embassies and consulates in Canada.” This will interfere with their normal functioning. “Therefore, our embassies and consulates are temporarily unable to issue visas.” Canada also wants to temporarily reduce the staff of its embassy in India. “We are taking steps to ensure the safety of our diplomats,” the Canadian embassy told The Hindu and India Today on Thursday, saying: “Some diplomats have received threats on various social media platforms.” A Canadian Embassy spokesperson could not initially be reached at the request of the German Press Agency. Relations between the two countries are currently at their lowest ebb after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of carrying out the targeted killing of a Canadian citizen – a charge India deemed “absurd” and politically motivated. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in New Delhi also advised its citizens to exercise extreme caution when traveling to Canada. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson also said on Thursday that Canada had not shared any “specific” information with India about the allegations. The slain Hardeep Singh Nijjar was a well-known supporter of an independent state for the Sikh religious community on Indian soil. He was killed in June Shot in Canada. Indian authorities have long searched for the man and accused him of “terrorism”. Many people of Indian origin live in Canada. Most of them are Sikhs.
