If the technology appears, regulations must be prepared!

Bisnis.comJAKARTA — President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) once again highlighted the phenomenon TikTok Store which he sees as a reflection of bureaucratic delays in developing regulations.

The number one in Indonesia believes that the bureaucracy should immediately prepare regulations that can regulate the existence of new technologies. Additionally, there are pros and cons regarding TikTok Shop, which would threaten the offline MSME climate.

“Technology must appear, regulations must be prepared by our bureaucracy. Whenever it appears, prepare it. If it is not ready, what will happen later, like what just happened, TikTok Shop, could hit our MSMEs, hit our traditional markets.”, he said when opening the Korpri National Working Meeting at the Mercure Ancol Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday (03/10/2023) .

Furthermore, the Head of State said that in reality, any e-commerce can bring benefits if supported by regulations, but it can have negative impacts if the necessary regulations are not followed.

In fact, not just in Indonesia, Jokowi added that similar concerns about the challenges of new technologies are faced in a number of major countries.

According to him, at the G20 summit in India last September, six countries were concerned about the development of artificial intelligence (AI).

“The scary thing is that the technology has already advanced, the regulations are not ready, they don’t exist yet, they are everywhere,” he said.

For this reason, the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia also emphasized that the State Civil Apparatus (ASN) and the bureaucracy have the task of developing regulations related to the rapid development of technology.

“The focus needs to be changed, but it starts from the center first. The system, the rules, the regulations, the direction must change,” Jokowi concluded.

Previously, the government, through the Ministry of Commerce (Kemendag), officially banned the trading of TikTok. This ban is governed by Regulation No. 31 of 2023 of the Ministry of Commerce, which is a revision of Regulation No. 50 of 2020 of the Minister of Commerce Concerning Provisions on Business Licensing, Advertising, Development and Supervision commercial actors in trade via the electronic PMSE system.
