India has a large population but there could be a rice surplus, that’s the secret according to the commerce minister

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Minister of Commerce Zulkifli Hasan said one of the keys that India can achieve excess rice because it has good agricultural governance. One of the main things is the application of technology. India would be at the forefront of applying latest technologies to boost its agricultural production.

“India prioritizes agricultural policy. They use the latest technologies to boost agricultural production,” said Zulkifli in Central Jakarta, Monday (9/11/2023).

Zulhas, his nickname, explains that in a year, India can harvest up to three times. India can also create a free fertilizer program for its farmers.

He also said that India was prioritizing the welfare of farmers by implementing a cooperative system. Zulhas said Indonesia reached a golden age of food self-sufficiency under President Soeharto’s regime by implementing what India is currently implementing.

“Meanwhile, in Indonesia, this is still controlled by conglomerates. As in the era of the New Order of Pak Harto (Soeharto). Fertilizer cooperatives, cooperative rice mills, rice agents are cooperatives, everything is regulated like that. community,” Zulhas said.

Zulhas explained that India is currently implementing a rice export ban. India is said to have a rice surplus of up to 7 million tonnes. With a population of over 1.4 billion people, India’s population never runs out of rice.
