Madhya Pradesh state police in India have arrested a man because a video of him urinating on someone in public went viral on social media some time ago.
The man is Pravesh Shukla. He is now accused of violating laws protecting oppressed social groups.
Pravesh Shukla’s video, which went viral from Tuesday (4/7/2023), also sparked public anger in the country.
Launch BBC News, Wednesday (7/05/2023), in the video Shukla is seen smoking a cigarette and urinating on the face of a man sitting on the side of the road. Some reports also say that Shukla was drunk at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, several politicians from the main opposition parties have accused Shukla of being affiliated with the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), particularly in Madhya Pradesh. However, the BJP has denied the allegations.
On the other hand, the police also declined to comment on the allegations and said the facts of the case should be investigated further.
Just to let you know, even though there are laws to protect members of certain tribes, discrimination against them and against people from lower castes still exists in India.
“The incident has embarrassed the entire Madhya Pradesh. “The severest punishment must be meted out to the guilty and the atrocities against the tribals of Madhya Pradesh must stop,” former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath wrote in a tweet on his Twitter account.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also expressed his anger and said the government would enforce the strict National Security Act (NSA). (bnt/bil/rid)
