Banerjee was removed as CMD by IRFC in 2022 after allegations surfaced that he was being investigated in an unrelated corruption case registered by the CBI in 2019.
The investigating agency had received a complaint from the Joint Director (Vigilance) Railway Board in February alleging financial embezzlement by IRFC officials in connection with the procurement and distribution of “gold and non-gold gift items” from IRFC funds .
“The Vigilance Department and the Railway Authority have examined two IRFC files and recorded statements, uncovering serious irregularities relating to the procurement and distribution of gold and non-gold items,” the FIR said.
The CBI’s Economic Crimes Division has registered the case under sections on criminal embezzlement, misappropriation of property by improper means and sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, an official said.
In the vigilance report submitted to the CBI, the railway authority mentioned that despite best efforts, IRFC officials led by then-CMD Amitabha Banerjee (who now no longer has CMD authority) have failed to provide a list of the beneficiaries of these gold and non-gold corporate gifts. “In addition, no SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) was specified,” the FIR further claimed.
