The India-Pakistan game at the Asian Cup was abandoned because drizzle prevented play after the innings break on Saturday.

India were ejected for 266 within 50 overs after opting to bat first. Pakistan failed to respond, ruining the first one-day international match between them since the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England.

The points were shared and Pakistan advanced to the second round, having already beaten Nepal. India must beat Nepal in their last group game to progress.

The Indian batsmen battled Pakistan’s three-pronged pace attack, all reaching speeds in excess of 140km/h. Shaheen Afridi conceded four wickets and Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf three each.

Afridi snatched up the big wickets of Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (4) with the new ball to put Pakistan ahead and Harris Rauf fired Shubman Gill (10) and Shreyas Iyer (14) to put India up 66-4 to reduce.

India bounced back thanks to a stand in the fifth wicket between Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan who added 138 runs from 141 deliveries.

After the top spot collapsed, Pakistani captain Babar Azam provided momentum and India regained momentum.

The stand was broken when Rauf attacked again and took the wicket from Kishan. The Indian wicketkeeper made 82 of 81 balls with nine fours and two sixes.

Shaheen then took two wickets in an over, including top scorer Hardik Pandya, 87 of 90 deliveries with seven fours and a six.

After that, Naseem Shah prevailed to take India to the full in 48.5 overs, capping an excellent day for Pakistan.

There were two rain stoppages during India’s innings, but the game proceeded without reducing the overs.
