New Delhi: Coal India on Friday reported a 13.2% year-on-year increase in its coal production over the past month to 52.3 million tonnes (MT) of coal in August.

In August 2022, the public sector conglomerate produced 46.2 tons.

According to a company statement, Coal India has produced 281.5 tonnes of the mineral to date in the current fiscal year (FY24), representing an 11% growth compared to the same period last fiscal year.

Total shipments to all consumer sectors increased to 59 tons in August 2023, an increase of 15.3% compared to 51.2 tons in the same month last fiscal year.

In April-August 2023, the total coal take-off increased to 305.5 tons, a growth of around 8% compared to the same period last year, when the take-off was 283.1 tons.

Coal India shipments to non-electricity sector increased by 61% to 12.1 tons in August 2023.

Deliveries to the energy sector totaled around 47 tons, up almost 8% compared to 43.6 tons in the same month last year.

From April to August 2023, the country’s coal-fired power plants received 248.7 tons of coal from CIL sources, a 2% comparable growth. Deliveries to the energy sector amounted to 243.5 tons in April-August 2023.

Coal stocks at CIL bases as of August 31st were a comfortable 45.3 tons, up 46% compared to 31 tons of coal stocks on the same date last year.

In August, demand for electricity in the country hit new highs as temperatures rose and monsoon rains eased. On August 17, peak electricity demand reached 234 GW, beating the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) estimate of 230 GW peak demand this year.
