Russia is pleased with the growth of the BRICS countries. The world map post may have spoiled Vladimir Putin’s mood.

Moscow – With his war in Ukraine, Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin wants to unify all of his neighbors. After the fall of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s government in Kiev. In this endeavor, however, the powerful from Moscow appear to have made a grave mistake.

Putin and Ukraine War: Four oblasts illegally annexed

Even though the troops he sent were said to have occupied about a fifth of Ukraine’s territory. Putin also used this initial impetus last fall to annex four regions, Cherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Luhansk, in violation of international law after the sham referendums.

The 70-year-old knows this, because in 2014 he made headlines with the annexation of Crimea’s Black Sea peninsula. For historical reasons alone, this is extremely important for Russia. However, Putin’s decision during the Ukraine conflict also resulted in his being expelled from the G8, which later became the G7 again.

Putin and the BRICS: Confederation of States will develop in 2024 – Iran & Co. will be added

Instead of being part of a federation of the leading industrialized countries in the western world, Russia is now one of the BRICS countries. The association gets its name from the initials of its previous members: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. These five countries combine for more than 40 percent of the world’s population.

They will also grow in 2024. At the recent BRICS summit in South Africa, where Putin was represented by foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, it was decided to accept six more countries: open doors to Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia , and the United Arab Emirates. Most likely, BRICS will be BRICS plus.

So something is growing there. For Putin, this is an even more important signal to the outside world, as he has been isolated, at least in some parts of the world, since the start of the invasion. Therefore, the President’s confidants from Moscow are trying to make the expansion visible to the whole world.

Putin and Crimea: The embassy post surprisingly considers the peninsula part of Ukraine

Therefore, the Twitter account of the Russian embassy in South Africa shared a world map with the 2024 BRICS members highlighted in green. And it looks impressive, thanks to the vastness of the continents of Russia, Brazil or China. Only North America and Europe are completely white, while Africa is also still largely devoid of BRICS.

What is also visible under the comment “Reality of the multipolar world”: The map shows Russia’s known borders since before the annexation. Crimea is also shown in white and is therefore part of Ukraine, as are four regions in the south and east of the country.

How Putin reacted to this post is unknown. Presumably he didn’t applaud or even award his author a merit medal. However, the tweet can no longer be found on the account. But it documents that it exists Picture-Reporter Jeanne Plaumann. (mg)
