Seattle University will host the Seattle-Setu Conference on September 6th, which will explore the myriad of Washington State-India relationships and how to further advance global security, trade and investment. Seattle-Setu will highlight Seattle’s central role in building economic and political bridges with India.

“As both India and the United States grapple with common challenges — like climate change and threats to our democratic institutions — we can learn a lot from each other,” said Eduardo Peñalver, President of Seattle University. “We hope that the Seattle-Setu Conference will highlight the importance of India to this region and will use Seattle University as a venue for discussions on India and US-India relations, and as a bridge between the larger community of Seattle and the largest democracy in the world world.” .”

Distinguished legal experts from India and the United States will provide insights into cross-border business at the conference and leading Puget Sound social entrepreneurs will discuss the social impact of their initiatives, including Sunny Singh, founder of Edifecs and the RoundGlass Foundation.

“The strengthening geopolitical relationship between India and the United States is opening up new opportunities for trade, investment and growth,” said Sital Kalantry, law professor and associate dean for graduate studies & international programs at the Seattle University School of Law. “Conference attendees will gain knowledge of the business opportunities created by improved India-US relations, how to navigate the legal landscape in India when doing business in India, and how non-profit organizations can contribute to poverty alleviation and growth in India.”

The conference will begin at 7:30 am with registration and breakfast before welcome speeches will be given by Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, among others. The agenda will be highlighted by insightful panel discussions and two keynote addresses in the afternoon: After lunch, Washington 7th Circuit Representative Pramila Jayapal will deliver a keynote address on opportunities for Seattle to engage with India, and later Deputy Nancy Izzo Jackson Assistant Secretary of State for India at the US Department of State will deliver remarks on the past, present and future of US-India relations.

Setu, derived from Sanskrit, means bridge.
