During the G20 summit at Bharat Mandapam – one of the world’s largest convention centers – they intended to prevent marauding rhesus monkeys from causing trouble and destroying the flower arrangements used as decorations.
The city council specially hired more than 30 “wallah monkeys” to mimic the calls of the aggressive langurs – natural enemies of the smaller rhesus monkeys.
“We couldn’t drive the monkeys out of their natural habitat, so we formed a team of 30 to 40 people to scare the monkeys away,” City Council deputy chairman Satish Upadhyay told AFP.

The “monkey men” will be housed in the delegation’s hotels and in all places where monkeys are seen. In addition, life-size stuffed langurs were also made to scare away rhesus monkeys.
Monkeys are worshiped in Hinduism, but in India they are a widespread nuisance, wreaking havoc in parks, wrecking roofs and even attacking humans in search of food.
For decades, men with trained langurs patrolled the streets of New Delhi scaring off rhesus monkeys. This practice is now over animal welfare reasons written off.
