Manipur

A horrible incident happened in Manipur, India. Two women marched naked and were gang-raped. This incident sparked public outrage until the home of the man who raped and paraded the naked Indian woman was set on fire.

Conflict

Reported AFP And The gardians, on Friday (21/7/2023), the inter-ethnic conflict took place between the Meitei ethnic group and the Kuki ethnic group. The Meitei, who are predominantly Hindu and live in and around the Imphal region, along with the Kuki, who are mostly Christian and live in the local hills.

The Kuki ethnic group protested the demands of the Meitei ethnic group for quotas for public works and university admissions, as part of a form of affirmative action. It also rekindled long-standing Kuki fears that Meitei might be allowed to acquire land in areas currently reserved for them and other ethnic minorities.

Viral women paraded naked

Reports indicate that the two women in the viral video are members of the Kuki ethnic minority. The pair were reportedly forced to strip naked by a mob made up mostly of members of Manipur’s ethnic Meitei majority.

“If you don’t undress, we’ll kill you,” the crowd chanted in the viral video.

The two women were allegedly groped in public and dragged through a field. Both were allegedly gang raped in the field.

The crime has been reported to the police since last May. However, the arrest of the suspect did not take place until Thursday (7/20) local time. Four suspects have been arrested, exactly one day after the video went viral on social media.

Local media outlet The Wire said police were indeed present at the scene when the incident happened. However, the police reportedly did not help the two female victims. One of the victims even accused the police of giving herself and another woman into the hands of the mob.

The younger brothers of 2 women were also killed

The incident in which two women paraded naked through the streets of Manipur was also tinged with other horrific incidents. The women’s younger brothers were reportedly killed as they tried to rescue their older brother.
