Badminton News: Last week’s Canada Open champion Lakshya Sen continued his run in the US Open World Tour Super 300 tournament by reaching the semi-finals on Saturday, while two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu was knocked out in the quarter-finals.
PV Sindhu lost to Chinese player Gao Fang Jie with consecutive matches 20-22, 13-21 in the Super 300 tournament.
But Sen won the last eight All India matches against S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian 21-10, 21-17.
In the semi-finals, Lakshya Sen will face All England Open 2023 champion, Chinese prospect Li Shi Feng.
On the one hand, second seed Li Shi Feng managed to get rid of Taiwanese player Su Li Yang in two consecutive games, which was quite easy with the score 21-14, 21-16.
Olympic medalist Sindhu looked to be struggling against her Chinese opponent, world number 36 Gao Fang Jie, but the Indian’s inability to win long rallies proved crucial in the opener.
Sindhu really took over in the second set as Fang Jie stepped up his game and gave the Indian some space to get to the net and play his drop shot.
Sindhu beat Korea’s Sung Shuo Yun to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.
In an all-Indian match, third seed Sen easily beat 19-year-old promising Subramanian from Chennai.
Sen won 42 rallies against Subramanian to dominate the quarter-finals which ended in 38 minutes in Iowa.
