REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA — The Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) accompanied by the Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Heri Akhmadi and the Acting Director General of the Ministry of Water Resources PUPR Jarot Widyoko welcomes the visit of the Emperor of Japan Naruto at Sabo Engineering Center, Yogyakarta on Wednesday (21/6/2023). Basuki revealed that the visit to the Sabo Engineering Center was due to Emperor Naruhito has an interest in the field of water resources management. Naruhito is eager to see progress sabo technology originally from Japan to Indonesia.

“Application of technology sabo dam it is one of the important results of cooperation between Indonesia and Japan which has existed since 1958 under the Colombo plan. We want this collaboration to continue. The sabo project ended in 2021 and we are currently designing it so that it can continue,” Basuki said as quoted in his official statement.

Indonesia has 129 active volcanoes, while Japan has 111 active volcanoes.

Sabo comes from two Japanese words namely Sa which means sand and Bo which means control. Sabo technology is a technique used to anticipate debris flows and control sediment in a landscape, especially mountain rivers.

“So lava control uses sabo dam. Sabo Dam This serves to accommodate sand and lava sediments when hot and cold lava eruptions occur. Many have been built, as on Mount Merapi there are 277 sabo dam,” he explained.

Sabo Technical Center is a center under the General Directorate of Water Resources of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing which is responsible for carrying out the development, engineering and implementation of technical services for testing, examination , inspection and certification in the field of sabo. .

The Sabo Technical Center also has sabo vertical training center to conduct sabo field training. This training is not only followed by engineer Indonesia only but also India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Papua New Guinea.

“Sabo experts from Japan started in Indonesia in 1970. More than 350 Japanese sabo experts came here to help us design sabo, and we sent 100 engineers from Indonesia to study sabo in Japan,” Basuki said.

Basuki said: His Majesty Emperor Naruhito expressed his appreciation for Indonesia for being able to introduce sabo technology to other countries, including one through the Sabo Technical Center.

“He also hopes that this cooperation can continue, because with the implementation of sabo technology in Indonesia, Japan will also benefit feedback to improve and modernize the technology,” he said.
