India: at least 21 dead after bus falls from bridge

At least 21 people died in a bus crash on Tuesday 9 May in central India. The vehicle fell off a bridge after the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Three of the victims were children. At least 21 people died on Tuesday in central India, after a driver fell asleep at the wheel of his bus, causing the vehicle to fall off a bridge.

The accident occurred about 120 kilometers south of Indore, the largest city in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. Among the victims, three were children and ten were women, according to the Times of India newspaper.

Runaway driver

At the time of the incident, the bus was heading for Indore. It crashed into a bridge railing, crashing into a dry riverbed, the paper said. Meanwhile, the driver of the car fled.

According to a World Bank report published in 2021, India accounts for 11% of the total number of road deaths in the world, while India has only 1% of the vehicles circulating in the world. The same report estimates 150,000 deaths from car crashes in India every year, or one person every four minutes.
