In Pakistan, bad weather causes at least 27 deaths, typhoon approaching

A series of dangerous meteorological episodes, which have just begun. Torrential rains accompanied by strong winds have killed at least 27 people including eight children in northwestern Pakistan, with most of the deaths resulting from collapsing buildings, local authorities said Sunday (June 11).

“At least 12 people were buried after the roof and walls of their houses collapsed”said Taimur Ali Khan, spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

Fifteen people died in Bannu district, including five siblings aged between 2 and 11 years. More than 140 others were injured, and more than 200 livestock died, the spokesman said.

Emergency state

Bad weather affected four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province late Saturday, and authorities there declared a state of emergency. The authorities also announced that the typhoon was approaching Pakistan and India from the Arabian Sea.

A statement from the Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority warned of very heavy rains and winds of up to 100 km/h in the coming week. “Fishermen are advised not to go out into the open sea” until the end of this weather show “on June 17th”the statement said.

Last summer, Pakistan experienced unprecedented monsoon rains that killed more than 1,700 people, flooded a third of the country and damaged two million homes.
