The winner of the WTC final between Australia and India took home US$1.6 million

The winner of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia will be $1.6 million richer, while the runner-up will take home $800,000, the ICC announced on Friday.

The winner’s check is the same as that of the 2019-21 cycle, where New Zealand beat India in the final in Southampton.

The ICC’s total portfolio for the current WTC cycle, which ends with next month’s final at The Oval in London, is $3.8 million. With $2.4 million split between the two finalists, the remaining amount will be awarded based on the team’s ranking in the WTC table.

Third-placed South Africa will receive $450,000, while the fourth-placed United Kingdom will receive $350,000. Fifth-placed Sri Lanka will win $200,000, and numbers six through nine, New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh, in that order, will win $100,000 each.

The 2021-23 WTC Finals will be played June 7-11, with June 12 being a reserve day. While Australia finished top with 66.67% of the points awarded, India came second with 58.80%. The two teams also met in a four-game series in India earlier this year, which India won 2-1.

Earlier this month, India also overtook Australia in the ICC test rankings, reclaiming the top spot.

This happens even if neither team has played Test cricket recently, as the rankings take into account certain periods and series completed before that period, losing some of their value. In this case, the ranking considers all series completed since May 2020, with series completed before May 2022 weighing 50% and all since weighing 100%.
