Gujarat Titans book playoff spot, Mohammad Shami rises to top, Shubman Gill second

Defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) became the first team of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season to qualify for the Playoffs with their comprehensive 34-point win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday. GT now have 18 points from 13 games and will also finish in the top two of the IPL 2023 points table to seal their place in Qualifier 1.

SRH, on the other hand, became the second team after the Delhi Capitals (DC) to be knocked out of the playoff race. Like DC, SRH also have just 8 points from 12 matches so far. Mumbai Indians (MI) or Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who are currently third and fourth in the points table, can take a big step towards booking a playoff spot with a win on Tuesday night when the two teams will face off at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

MI have 14 points from 12 matches while Krunal Pandya-led LSG have 13 points from 12 matches. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) of MS Dhoni currently sit second with 15 points from 13 matches and will face DC in their final league clash in New Delhi on Saturday.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) currently sit 5th-8th with 12 points.

Shubman Gill moved up to 2nd place in the Orange Cap race

GT fly-half Shubman Gill scored his first IPL cent against SRH on Monday and also became his side’s first batsman to score a century. Gill’s 101 from 58 runs propelled him into second place in the Orange Cap run with 576 runs in 13 games – behind RCB captain Faf du Plessis, who has so far made 631 runs in 12 games with 7 fifties.

Gill is one point ahead of third flyhalf RR Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has 575 points in 13 games. The GT opener scored 1 century and 4 fifty in the 2023 IPL season.

CSK flyhalf Devon Conway is fourth with 498 points in 13 games while MI batsman Suryakumar Yadav is 5th with 479 points in 12 games with 1104 under his belt.

Mohammad Shami takes over the Purple Hat

Pacer GT Mohammad Shami has collected the IPL 2023 purple cap from teammate and leg spinner Rashid Khan. Both Shami and Rashid have 23 wickets in 13 matches, but the leaders are averaging 16.73 from the last 18. Shami won 4/21 in his last match against SRH on Monday night.

RR spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is in third place with 21 wickets from 13 matches while MI spinner Piyush Chawla is fourth with 19 wickets from 12 matches and could add to his tally against LSG on Tuesday night.
