Badminton News: Indian badminton players secured a tough draw at the 2023 Sudirman Cup on Sunday as they were placed with Malaysia and Taiwan in Group C of the world’s most prestigious mixed team competition taking place. will be held in Suzhou, China from May 14-21. Australia are the fourth team in Group C, which could be a deal breaker.
India recorded their best performances in the 2011 and 2017 editions of the Sudirman Cup. In the last two editions, India could not reach the quarter-finals.
India qualified for the Sudirman Cup after winning the bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Mixed Team Badminton Championships last February in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
This most prestigious team competition will face 16 teams, including continental champions from China, Denmark, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and South Korea.
China, 12 times champion, will face Denmark, Singapore and Egypt in Group A, while Indonesia, who won the title in its first edition in Jakarta in 1989, will face Thailand, Germany and Canada in Group B.
In Group D are Japan, four-time winners South Korea, France and England who will battle it out for a place in the round of 16.
Each match of the competition will be played in five matches, namely men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and also mixed doubles.
The Sudirman Cup is the BWF’s World Mixed Team Championship which takes place every two years and is held before the Olympic year.
