SOREANG NEWSPAPER – India withdrew from the 1950 World Cup as they were not allowed to play barefoot.
India shocked the world with their performance at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England.
The Indian national team used to play barefoot football (some players played with socks while most played barefoot), losing to France by a narrow margin of 2–1.

This match has already attracted a lot of attention as the 1948 Summer Olympics marked India’s debut in an international tournament as an independent nation.
However, the fact that the Indian team appeared to be playing barefoot football was in the spotlight.
FIFA explained that if India wanted to participate in the 1950 World Cup barefoot, they would not be allowed.

FIFA has decided that the participating teams will be drawn from seven European teams, six from America and one from Asia. The problem is that of the four Asian teams invited to the World Cup, only India remains.
