Al Jazeera and the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that the IDF (the Israeli army) killed him, while Israel reported that it was possible that it was Palestinians who killed him, then Israel announced that the identity of the killer remains unknown.
Shireen is a well-known journalist in Arab countries. Frequently reporting on events in Palestine and analyzing Israeli politics, he inspired many Palestinians and Arabs to pursue careers in journalism.
The shooting that resulted in his death and the riots during his funeral procession have been condemned in Israel for beating mourners with batons. His funeral was one of the largest in Palestine with thousands of Palestinians in attendance.
Shireen was born in Jerusalem on January 3, 1971 to a Palestinian Christian family from Bethlehem. He grew up in the United States, obtaining American citizenship through his mother’s family who lived in New Jersey.
Shireen was a student at a school in Beit Hanina, then enrolled at the Jordanian University of Science and Technology to study architecture, but then dropped out.
He then enrolled at Yarmouk University in Jordan, from where he earned a degree in journalism. After graduating, Shireen returned to Palestine.
Prior to working at Al Jazeera, Shireen worked as a journalist at Radio Monte Carlo and Voice of Palestine. He has also worked for UNWRA, Amman Satellite Channel and MIFTAH.
In 1997, he started working for Al Jazeera as a journalist, as one of its field correspondents, and then rose to prominence on the Arabic news channel. Shireen lives and works in East Jerusalem, reporting on Palestine-related events, including the Second Intifada, and also covering Israeli political news. He frequently covers the funerals of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.
