At least 22 people have died after a two-deck tourist boat sank in Kerala waters, India South side. The cause of the sinking of the tour boat is still unclear.
As reported AFPMonday (05/08/2023), incident sinking boat this happened in Tanur, a precision town in Malappuram district, Kerala, Sunday (7/5) evening local time. A passenger rescue operation is underway.
Dozens of officers searched for possible survivors of the incident in and around the ship throughout Sunday night (7/5) when the vessel was partially submerged. Some of the officers used ropes to stabilize the ship while others were in the water checking inside the portholes.
“We found 22 bodies, including 15 women and seven men. There are about six people in the hospital. The rescue operation is underway,” said a Tanur police official, who requested the anonymity. AFP.
The police chief said there were around 30 people on the tour boat when the incident happened.
Local media report Onmanorama said 11 people from the same family were killed in the incident. Three of them would be children.
Local Sports and Fisheries Minister V Abdurahiman, who helped coordinate the rescue efforts, said most of the victims were children who were on school holidays. More than 30 people are believed to have been on board the incident.
