US wants to tighten sanctions on Russia

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday (2/23) that America was seeking tougher sanctions on Russia and called for more support for Ukraine as it retaliated against the invasion from Moscow.

Yellen was speaking at India’s technology center in Bangalore, where financial leaders from a group of 20 countries with leading economies met to discuss challenges such as high debt and inflation that many low-income countries face . His comments came a day before the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“As President Joe Biden has said, we will support Ukraine in its cause for as long as necessary,” he said at a press conference ahead of the G-20 meeting.

Yellen, who called Russia’s war on Ukraine a “strategic failure for the Kremlin,” said US military and economic aid to help Ukraine resist invasion and “continued support and robust” to the war-torn country would be the main topics of discussion at the G. -20 meeting.

He said that in the coming months, the United States hoped to provide about $10 billion in additional economic support to Ukraine and wanted the International Monetary Fund to negotiate an agreement to lend funds to Ukraine. [ps/jm]
