The Indonesian men’s doubles has won three of the four preliminary tournaments of the BWF Tour 2023. The Indonesian men’s doubles coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi to give his opinion.

The Malaysian Open was won by Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto while Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin successfully won titles at the Indonesian and Thai Masters.

Only the India Open Super 750 tournament escaped its clutches. The score of three titles at the start of the season is a good omen.

How does Herry IP rate the men’s doubles achievements at the start of the year? Here is CNNIndonesia.com’s interview with Herry IP after the Thailand Masters 2023 final:

How was Leo/Daniel’s evaluation after winning the Thailand Masters?

Even though their condition deteriorated after the Indonesia Masters final, even in the first round of the Thailand Masters, it was not easy for them, but their motivation was high.

His will to win is high, strong and sure he can. They can beat Daniel’s tiredness, fatigue, and injury status. This young player is a plus there.

Second, when their conditions were not optimal, their way of playing was different from when they appeared at the Indonesia Masters. They play more calmly.

At the Thailand Masters, more ball placement, more control. Yesterday at the Indonesia Masters they played hard, attacking everyone.

I have already started installing, saving energy. Now they can play with two different patterns.

From practice, of course, they already have a scheme like that, depending on the situation and conditions. In Indonesia, their energy is still fresh because even though they played in India before, they lost in the first round.

In Thailand, they played from day one to the final. Automatic energy and physical decline.

We have several models, depending on terrain conditions and body conditions. It’s like Leo/Daniel’s type of game, just like Ahsan/Hendra.

Did the Indonesian Masters win affect Leo/Daniel’s performance at the Thailand Masters?

Many influences, especially in terms of belief, self-confidence. They are calmer and do not panic even if they are late.

They always seem stable and calm. That’s what I really saw from my perspective after winning in Indonesia and then playing in Thailand.

Before winning in Indonesia and Thailand, Leo/Daniel lost in the first two rounds of the Malaysian Open and the Indian Open. What difference did it make after that?

I especially highlighted the defeat in Malaysia because they lost against Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen. At that time, I spoke a little louder, without anger, but with more emphasis. I want them to be calmer, more focused, more courageous.

In Malaysia they lost and their game didn’t come out at all. So it’s not natural to lose because it doesn’t look good. Both in defense and in attack.

After that against India they lost to Kevin/Gideon via rubber play. They lost experience, lost flying hours.

Leo/Daniel have been a couple since junior. What is the challenge for them?

They both have to accept the pros and cons. It is above all necessary to accept the faults of each partner. I can’t blame the partner. Because the partners certainly don’t want to play badly. When a partner plays badly, he must support, support, not even knock his partner down.

It took a long time and not a moment to say that.

Because when they were juniors they kept winning, winning, as soon as they became seniors they were under pressure, they lost. Now there is the problem, because the process of adapting from junior to senior takes time.

When the juniors often win, of course, when the seniors come in, they are “beaten” [kalah sama pemain-pemain senior] first, treat first. When you play you keep losing often, problems can come from there.

They need power, another way to play. That’s what you have to say, remember so that they both agree.

It turned out only after winning Singapore. They already trust each other, convinced that “he is my partner”.

During his victory in Thailand yesterday, Daniel’s leg was swollen and Leo was coughing?

Yes, Daniel can’t jump all the time. If you jump, as soon as you land, your feet hurt. If you jump left and right you don’t feel it, only if you jump you will feel it when you land.

Leo coughed from Indonesia Open, cough, bad flu. After finishing the semi-finals, he threw up a little, there was phlegm.

They can take care of it, that’s a plus. If you’re sick, you can continue, there’s no problem.

Can the Indonesian men’s doubles win three of the four preliminary tournaments in 2023?

Good start, good start. But don’t be complacent. There are still a lot of tournaments, next month there will be the All England and then there will also be bigger tournaments.

We must be more prepared, the journey is still long. We must be able to improve our abilities, be more vigilant, not let our guard down. Both players and coaches.

Tracking Yeremia Rambitan’s condition in the first three tournaments after returning from injury?

Still not 100% recovered. Not 100% recovered yet. The movements are still hesitant in certain positions, less rapid than before. This is what I saw yesterday in Thailand.

Movement is not yet flexible, not yet free. There is still some resistance. There is still some hesitation so the speed drops a bit.

If I think of his mind, still traumatized. Still not flexible. It still needs a process, it takes time. Because they also just played three tournaments.

As for Bagas/Fikri, who finally reached the semi-finals of the tournament after losing more often in the first two rounds of the second half of last year?

Their self-confidence has not returned to what it was. It’s a matter of confidence and belief in their own abilities. Still undecided. Sometimes it shows, sometimes not.

Like yesterday, at positions 18-18, the serve got blocked. I told them not to make unnecessary mistakes in the last points. If the initial points are not a problem, if the end points are critical.

What Bagas/Fikri needs is his self-confidence to be boosted again. Non-technical, mental and mental questions.

However, from a technical point of view, there is still a lot to improve. Still a lot of public relations. Play shouldn’t be limited to one pattern.

Herry IP hopes Bagas/Fikri can be more confident on the pitch. (doc. PBSI)
